Prolapse

The best care of Prolapse

What Is Prolapse?

Prolapse occurs when an internal organ slips or falls from its normal position due to weakening of the supporting muscles and tissues. It most commonly affects the pelvic organs, such as the uterus, bladder, or rectum, especially in women. The condition can cause discomfort and may affect daily activities if left untreated.

Types of Prolapse

  • Uterine Prolapse – The uterus descends into or outside the vaginal canal.
  • Bladder Prolapse (Cystocele) – The bladder bulges into the front wall of the vagina.
  • Rectal Prolapse – The rectum protrudes through the anus.
  • Rectocele – The rectum pushes into the back wall of the vagina.
  • Vaginal Vault Prolapse – Occurs after hysterectomy when the top of the vagina drops.

Causes

Prolapse is usually caused by weakening of pelvic floor muscles. Common contributing factors include:

  • Childbirth, especially multiple or difficult deliveries
  • Aging and menopause
  • Chronic constipation or straining
  • Heavy lifting
  • Obesity
  • Chronic coughing
  • Previous pelvic surgery

Signs & Symptoms

  • Feeling of heaviness or pressure in the pelvic area
  • A bulge or tissue protruding from the vagina or anus
  • Discomfort or pain while standing or walking
  • Difficulty with bowel movements or urination
  • Urinary leakage or frequent urge to urinate
  • Lower back pain

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is usually done through a physical examination. The doctor may assess the pelvic area and ask about symptoms. In some cases, imaging tests or additional evaluations may be required for accurate diagnosis.

Treatment Options

1. Non-Surgical Management
  • Pelvic floor exercises (Kegel exercises)
  • Lifestyle changes such as weight management
  • Use of a pessary (a supportive device inserted into the vagina)
  • Managing constipation and avoiding strain
2. Surgical Treatment

Surgery is recommended in moderate to severe cases or when symptoms affect quality of life.

Minimally Invasive Procedures:
Modern techniques allow correction with smaller incisions, less pain, and faster recovery.

Reconstructive Surgery:
Restores the normal position of the organs and strengthens pelvic support structures.

Recovery & Aftercare

  • Recovery time depends on the type of treatment
  • Avoid heavy lifting and straining during healing
  • Follow pelvic strengthening exercises as advised
  • Regular follow-up ensures proper recovery
